SHANNON NOVAK: The Nexus series installations
From 22 January 2018
Pātaka Art + Museum atrium
From 22 January 2018, the full height windows of Pātaka’s atrium will become a multi-coloured lantern of interconnected geometric forms. Created by award-winning New Zealand artist Shannon Novak, this specially-designed installation will flood the atrium with colours and shapes, and also fill your ears with sound composed by Shannon, via a free app that you can download to accompany the artwork. Key elements from Pātaka’s window installation will also be echoed at other sites scattered throughout the city, including a dynamic makeover of the outside of Cannon’s Creek library.
Shannon likens his multi-site installation to “a large submerged creature with many limbs. The head and heart is seen at Pātaka, whilst the arms, feet and other extremities appear at other sites across Porirua city. What does it mean? Well – that everything is connected in some way”. This project aims to build and strengthen Pātaka’s close relationship with its surrounding community by inspiring and encouraging budding artists to develop work beyond the gallery.
