SEBASTIEN JAUNAS
Mirror: Reflections of the Soul
Toi Gallery. Pātaka
19 October – 18 November 2018
Artist’s reception: 3pm Saturday 20th October

Kāpiti sculptor Sebastien Jaunas describes the wall-mounted steel sculptures in his exhibition as introspective explorations of the human psyche.

Sebastien hopes his sculptures will inspire observers to search inside themselves for a fundamental sense of identity – behind their outward physical appearance. He believes that the inner and outer selves are often quite different, the outer sometimes just a mask to present to the world while the inner-self remains hidden and private.

Sebastien creates his sculptures by forging, manipulating and welding recycled steel into constructions to which he then adds protruding elements of various recycled mixed media.

Originally from France, Sebastien Jaunas has been a resident of Paekakariki since 2006.

His abstract sculptures in bronze, forged steel, ceramic, wood and mixed media explore the tensions of balance, space and movement. Strongly influenced by found organic objects and the landscape of New Zealand, he is also inspired by the urbanism and cultural life of cities.
