“A life well lived”
On Saturday 13th January Porirua paid tribute to Dr Allan Gibson Smith (MNZM), at a service held at Pātaka Art + Museum.
Dr Smith passed away peacefully in Taupo on Sunday, 7 January aged 93 years.
Dr Smith was celebrated for his devotion as a G.P. to the Titahi Bay community for many years, in addition to this, he led specialist maternity care at Kenepuru Maternity Hospital and established the Te Aro Health Trust in Wellington with fellow doctor Ernst Phillip.
Dr Smith’s contribution to Porirua arts and culture was also exceptional.
He enthusiastically supported the efforts of his late wife Helen Smith, who was a Porirua city councillor for 30 years and instrumental in getting Pātaka Art + Museum built.
The pair were also key in setting up several community institutions such as the Porirua Little Theatre.
Dr Smith was a keen member of the Friends of Pātaka and with the Smith Family has sponsored the Open Award in the Friends of Pātaka Arts Award.
In 2013 Allan Smith was honoured with a Mayoral Certificate of Recognition for his long involvement in Porirua affairs.
