Te Kete Aronui by Sam Te Tau

Whakaaro Hohonu: Meditate Profoundly
Work by Samuel Te Tau, Ephraim Russell and Asher Newbery
8 August – 1 September 2013 in the Toi Gallery

Hailing from one end of the country to the other, Samuel Te Tau, Ephraim Russell and Asher Newbery met in Palmerston North and found common ground in contemporary Maori arts and specifically in painting. This exhibition is their first show together and offers their work as prime examples of the variety of images and concepts produced within Maori visual communities today. When asked about the dynamic of the group, Newbery said “We are all taking this kaupapa from different angles but we’re all influenced by the same thing; the works of our tupuna.”
