Saturday 6 February 10am 4pm EVENTS AT PATAKA FOR FESTIVAL OF THE ELEMENTS, WAITANGI DAY Join us at Pataka and celebrate Waitangi Day. Local artists and craftspeople will be demonstrating their skills and creative talents in the Spine. Try out your dancing skills or just give it a go at our Have a Go at Dance sessions in the performing arts studio. Hip Hop, the Samba, Line Dancing and Bollywood. Also join us for an Ethiopian Coffee ceremony and cultural dance as a part of the Ethiopia, Three Perspectives exhibition. Call Pataka on 237 1511 for information on the classes. FIREFIREWATERWATER DRUMMING WORKSHOPS Richard Yaw Boateng, a master drummer, dancer and composer will be offering West African drumming workshops at Pataka. Richard is from Ghana where music is an integral part of everyday life. Richard has his own 5 piece percussion band called ZohZoh. Dont miss this great opportunity to learn from a master. Each workshop will be 1.5 hours long.bookings are essential and payment confirms your place. Saturday 27 February 10am 2pm DRAWING WORKSHOP Catherine O'Donnell is an Australian artist from Porirua City Councils Sister City, Blacktown, Sydney. Catherine is exhibiting at Pataka in the Bottle Creek Gallery with her Light and Shadow exhibition. Catherine's work includes large scale charcoal drawings of urban streetscapes using light and shadow. This drawing workshop is for people who would like to explore light and shadow using charcoal along with classical drawing techniques such as perspective, composition and symmetry. MARIANNE ELLIOTT, WRITER AND HUMAN RIGHTS LAWYER, TALKS ABOUT HER TIME IN AFGHANISTAN Marianne Elliott is a writer and human rights lawyer who worked for two years (2006-07) with the United Nations Assistance Mission to Afghanistan. For much of that time she worked in Ghor province, which neighbours Bamiyan and shares many of its characteristics and challenges. She will talk about the challenges facing people living in the heartland of Afghanistan, share stories of the people she met and worked with and invites you to see a different side of Afghansitan from the one most often shown in the news. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Sunday 28 March - 1pm in the Education Space MAKEART Maskmaking We will be looking at the West African masks for some inspiration and then heading to the Education Space for this maskmaking extravaganza. This is a makeART session where an adult and child make a mask artwork together. $5 cost for 1 adult/1 child. THE CHALLENGES OF EMBEDDED JOURNALISM and UNIQUE FILM FOOTAGE of AFGHANISTAN with ALEX VAN WEL In August 2009 Alex Van Wel became the first journalist to fully embed with the New Zealand Defence Force in Afghanistan. Alex went out on patrol into the volatile north east region of Bamiyan Province where the Provincial Reconstruction Team is based. In addition, he spent time at Bagram air-base, in the capital Kabul, and in the southern Kandahar region where fighting between the Taliban and international forces is most fierce. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

WEST AFRICAN STORYTELLING Join Moira Wairama and Tony Hopkins, the Soul Food Tellers, in the gallery as they weave some storytelling around our West African exhibition West Africa, Rhythm and Spirit. Not to be missed. This is storytelling at its very best.

Want to have fun making art? Come and join the 'Arty Party', where you will learn great new skills, create your own masterpieces, and get to meet other keen young artists.
Be inspired by artworks created by some of the most exciting New Zealand and international artists. Create, draw, paint, construct and have lots of fun next door to some amazing artworks!
'The Art Zone' 9-12 yrs Wednesday 3:30 pm to 5:00 pm $6 per class - all materials provided
Calling all creative kids! Come along to the 'Art Zone'. We will explore different ways of drawing, painting, printing, sculpting, and much more. Have fun using some wonderful new materials, and developing new skills. Be inspired by some of the fantastic artworks that come into the gallery, and let the creativity begin!
'Art Beat' - Gifted and Talented, Art Extension classes 13-18 yrs Thursday 3:30 pm to 5:00 pm $6 per class - all materials provided
Are you a young artist who wants to learn more? Would you like a chance to use your amazing creative skills? The 'Art Beat' art extension group is for you. Create your own visual diary, learn new techniques, develop new skills, and learn how to extend your ideas into seriously good artworks. You will be challenged and supported in an inspiring art gallery environment. Who knows one day there may be space on Pataka's walls for you!
All Classes limited to 12 students per group. First in first served, so be in quick!
Artfix - Adult Art Classes Fridays 1 pm - 3 pm $6 per class - all materials provided
Wish to extend your art making skills in a friendly environment? Come and learn practical skills in the context of the art gallery. We will make work from a range of materials in a variety of media. Learn to draw from observation, paint with depth, use colour more effectively and communicate visually.
Students will be extended at their own level, beginners and artists with some experience are both welcome.
All classes are run by trained and experienced teachers. Spaces are limited so be in quick.
